- The author of this article has requested that other users offer their opinions and suggestions for improvement. Please use the discussion page to participate.
The objective of this page is to allow players to theorise on possible technologies Starfleet, the Klingon Empire and other races may have developed between Star Trek: Nemesis and STO. I hope people will make use of the discussion thread to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the difernt inventions as well as posting up creative and well-balanced ideas which could be incorporated into the game.
Please don't try creating devices which would make your ship unstoppable and indestructible, this would make for a very boring game. Instead try to design equipment which you wouldn't mind having to fight against at some point. For every advantage a piece of technology has try to counter with a disadvantage to explain why the equipment isn't just standard equipment on every ship.
And please don't make general, broad-ranging statements which limit other people's options. Even if you come up with a fantastic piece of equipment, don't say "This is now the only weapon/shield/toaster/remote-controlled back scratcher used throughout the Federation/Empire" unless you want someone else dictating what equipment you'd have to have on your ship too.

Weapons
'Alpha Strike' Targetting System
This advanced targetting system allows multiple weapons banks to lock onto the same point on an enemy's hull, causing exponentially more damage than a single weapon alone, but at the cost of firing power and coverage. This mode is not used often as it places strain on the weapons systems and drains their available power rather quickly, requiring them to be recharged.
Duron Phasers
Duron phasers are normal type XI ship-mounted phasers, enhanced with a substance called duron. Originating from the second and third planets of the Hadron system, duron is one of the rarest known elements. Luckily for us, the Federation were the first to explore this system and, to their delight, found it uninhabited.
After outposts had been built in that sector to mark their territory, the Federation began mining and research work for the material duron. Eventually, by the year 2382, the Daystrom Institute had discovered the amazing qualities of duron, and how it can be processed, concentrated and then implemented onto ship-mounted phasers. This gave the weapons an incredible damage increase, as well as shield drain on enemy vessels.
Given the rarity of duron phasers enhanced with this element are difficult to maintain and repair, having to rely on a steady supply of the mineral to remain operational.
EMP Torpedoes
Specially outfitted torpedo casings fitted out with wide area jamming technology. When they strike their target the electromagnetic burst cripples most ship's systems, leaving them unable to pursue the escaping target or at the mercy of a concentrated counter attack. The disadvantages of this weapon are the wide burst of the EM pulse meaning the firing ship has to remain distant from it's target to remain safe of the effects as well as the relative slow speed of the heavy warhead, making them far easier to evade or intercept than standard photon or quantum torpedoes.
Hellfire Torpedo
- For further details check the link at the bottom of the page.
The Hellfire was designed to bypass enemy shields and pack a punch to the enemy ship itself. The Hellfire is designed to 'skip' past enemy shielding using subspace phasing technology first used in 2368. The torpedo has a small, short range sensor array that, as it nears an enemy ship, scans it's target's shield 'bubble', frequency and modulation, and then activates the subspace phase transporter. This allows the Hellfire to move out of phase with the target, and re-appear within it's shield parameter, and impact directly on the hull.
The extra sensor equipment and subspace phase transporter significantly cuts into the size of the Hellfire's warhead making it weaker than standard quantum torpedoes, but often the ability to negate a target's shields makes this a minor concern.
Transphasic Torpedo
- For further details check the link at the bottom of the page.
This weapon is designed to phase through normal matter to enable it to pass through shielding and hull, detonating inside the target for maximum damage. However, due to include new systems and a larger warhead, the range of the torpedo has been limited. Also due to the weapon's highly volatile nature and intentions (used against extreme hostile forces, like the Borg), only a few are carried on ships.
Warp Interdictor mines
A highly illegal weapon the warp interdictor mine is actually a subspace detonator, disrupting warp fields and forcing any vessels to drop out of warp or risk a core breach. The main disadvantage, apart from the political backlash from using such technology, is the range of the effect. Any ship attempting to deploy the mine would have to already be traveling at warp 5 or higher in order to get clear and if a pursuing ship is traveling faster they may overrun the mine before it detonates.
Defenses
MLSS
- For further details check the link at the bottom of the page.
The MLSS (Multi-Layered Shielding System) is the latest shielding to be fielded by Starfleet's Research and Development department. It is a shielding system that comprises of three layers. The outermost layer manipulates graviton polarity, creating a graviton flux disruption that prevents tractor beams from locking on to the vessel. This layer also incorporates transport inhibitor technology, helping prevent an enemy from transporting aboard. The middle layer incorporates automatic rotation of frequency and modulation with meta-phasics, which absorbs enemy fire, spreads it out along the shield. The innermost shield layer is a multi-phaseic shield. Based on standard regenerative shielding, this is the ship's last line of defense.
The additional power drain of this system is sizable and requires far more energy than standard shielding systems, but the obvious advantage the system gives in combat more than makes up for this.
Shadow 'Cloaking' Device
An advanced form of the refractive shielding technology obtained by the USS Voyager while in the Delta Quadrant, the Shadow Cloak works by actively dampening the energy emissions of the vessel it is mounted as well as altering the waveform of any scanners interacting with the field so that they read either a negative response or one significantly different from the vessel's actual appearance. This technology has an advantage over standard cloaking devices as it relies on the power of the target's own sensors in order to blind them, greatly reducing the energy output required to operate the field. The disadvantage is that a sufficiently wary target with rotating frequency sensors can foul the field causing sensor ghosts to appear on their scanners, possibly exposing the vessel's operation while still preventing a positive weapons lock.
Transphasic Shielding
A shield system designed to modulate at speeds and unpredictable frequencies to confuse Borg weaponry and attacks. Adapted by Geordi La Forge of the Enterprise-E utilising transphasic torpedo knowledge of Admiral Janeways and applying it to shields as well. Though earlier attempts proved to be an excessive drain on the shield systems of starships it was later corrected with improved power distribution systems and better warp cores.
Propulsion
Quantum Slipstream Drive
- For further details check the link at the bottom of the page.
The slipstream is a narrowly-focused, directed warp field that is initiated by manipulating the fabric of the space-time continuum at the quantum level. It works by focusing a quantum field through a deflector dish to generate massive changes in local space curvature; this creates a subspace tunnel, which is projected in front of the vessel. Once a ship has entered this tunnel, the forces inside propel it at incredible speed. Unfortunately this drive system puts incredible strain on the vessel's structural integrity fields and requires continuous phase variance calibrations ibn order to remain in operation.
Repulsor Lift System
Rather than using the conventional thrusters found on most vessels in the galaxy instead the ship generates a repulsor field which allows the pilot far greater maneuverability within an atmosphere. These emitters can also be used to reinforce the ship's basic deflector shields.
Transwarp
Transwarp is a generic term for some speeds that exceed traditional warp drive limits. Although these system is considerably faster than standard warp engines they require far higher levels of power to maintain as well as putting extreme strain on any vessel making use of them.
Warp Array
Unlike most Federation drive systems the vessel's warp core is directly intergrated into the 'nacelles'. While this makes repairs difficult as the system is usually inaccessible from inside the ship the efficiency of the system seems to allow the ship to achieve far greater speeds than would be expected for a vessel its size.
Ship Design
Advanced Automation System
Rather than relying on a living and breathing crew to operate ship's systems insteaed the vessel is fitted with an array of automated devices which allow for far fewer crew and thus far less resources dedicated to life support and crew quarters. The disadvantage of this system is that repairs take considerably longer for the drastically reduced number of engineers and technicians available onboard but this is counterbalanced by the advantage of greater durability during combat.
Variable Geometry
The vessel's hull has been either designed or modified to allow it to be reconfigured for use in a variety of roles. This may include the ability to adjust warp nacelles for greater speed, the deployment of armour plating for better protection or simply the ability to extend sections of the ship for better cargo capacity.
Special Systems
Invasive Communications Array
A broad spectrum, multifrequency array tied into a dedicated multiplexing computer core the invasive array can initiate a computer linkup with virtually any known computer system while at the same time remaining undetected. The advanced heuristic search algorithms can then strip data from the target system quickly and efficiently. The greatest weakness of the technology is range with a ship needing to fly close to its target and remain at a fixed distance while the transfer is underway.
Wild Weasel shuttles
An old technology adapted for modern use, the Wild Weasels are remote piloted shuttle craft with specialised emitters which project false sensor readings to confuse a target. Best used in packs the Wild Weasels alternate between active and inactive causing sensor images to appear to jump from one location to another while the parent ship is safe to disengage. The disadvantage of these shuttles is that it's nearly impossible to recover them once deployed and usually they're fitted with tricobalt self destruct devices which not only destroy all trace of the technology and materials used in their construction, but can also be used in a pinch as an inaccurate but effective surprise attack weapon.
