Caught Between Two Worlds
Genetics aside, what a child gets from their parents is sometimes more about nurture than it is nature.
As the child of Starfleet officers, Jade Conway moved around often, finding home to be a concept both amoprhous and ethereal, and more an idealistic vision than a meaningful, tangible reality. Living at starbases and on Federation colonies, even spending a year aboard the USS Challenger, did nothing to give her a sense of belonging to any one place, despite her mother's insistance on regular trips back to Vulcan.
William Conway indulged his wife these things - as he had when labour began early and T'Shir insisted they return to Vulcana Regar for the birth - because of his love for her. Mixed bondings, though not commonplace, had succeeded enough times to make them accepted to some small degree, but they were always difficult. Colleagues who knew them marvelled at their divergent personalities in light of their intense devotion to each other.
As a child, Jade struggled with the strong influences of both parents and their drastically different cultures. It was difficult to reconcile the gentle humor and love her father openly expressed with the cold facade and pressure toward more traditional Vulcan values that her mother tried to impress upon her. Her father would always be sure she knew how much they both cared for her. Her mother always tucked her in at night with as much affection as she was capable of, but also ensured her education in the basic Vulcan philosophy of logic and repressed emotion was ongoing.
Her mother, a highly decorated and respected counselor, resigned her commission after the death of Jade's father at the battle of Wolf 359. Though neither would admit it, the elder due to a strict belief so basic to her sense of self as to be immutable, and the younger through a need to protect both of them despite themselves, his death altered their lives forever, and in ways too deep to acknowledge.
Growing Up
Despite typical human paternal patterns, her father had been a constant influence on her life before his death. He had taught her his own humor, he had played with her and encouraged her curiosity and creativity, things children of two Vulcan parents never truly experience. Though her mother had always seemed to dissaprove, she had never interfered, and this left Jade at an odd impasse as she moved into adulthood without him there to guide her. If she had been torn between two cultures before his loss, she was even morso now without him, and her method of dealing with this trouble was to devote herself to her studies.
As an exceptionally intelligent young woman, this was not difficult. Though a somewhat convoluted and confusing path, her educational career is none-the-less impressive even by Vulcan standards:
Education
- 2368 Accepted success in Akan-Veshtsu-tal (xenoarcheology) from the Vulcan Science Academy
- 2372 Masters Degree in xenoanthropology from UC Sacramento
- 2378 Masters Degree in xenoarcheology from UCLA
- 2379 Graduated Officer Candidate School, Starfleet Academy
- 2384 PhD in xenobiology from Harvard University, achieved through sub-space while serving aboard USS Tyler under Captain James McCormick. Thesis: Interspecies Parent-Offspring Coadaptation and the Dual Genetic Control of Maternal Care
- 2389 Accepted success in Akan-ha-tal (xenobiology) from the Vulcan Science Academy
- 2398 PhD in xenoarcheology from Harvard; Thesis: Ethno-Archaelogical Study of Proto-Vulcan Colonies In Three Near-Romulan Star Systems
- Currently working on a BA in English Literature from Oxford, but struggling with the concept of fiction, and literature as an art for its own sake
Starfleet Service
Though she graduated 2nd in her class from Starfleet Academy, Jade has not been ambitious in her rise through the ranks as much as she has been in her pursuit of her scientific curiosity. In this, though not the only thing to be sure, T'Shir has been silently approving. It was, in fact, twenty standard Federation years between her graduation from Starfleet Academy OCS and her first official starship command. The Academy Years
As a cadet she excelled in the more cerebral aspects of Officer Candidate School. Courses and programs that involved more practical hands-on matters were certainly not difficult, and she performed above average most of the time, but it was obvious early on where her interests truly lay.
Her performance during the Kobyashi Maru scenario was, however, less than spectacular.

USS Enigma
A relatively young lieutenant, Jade took command of the Centaur class experimental science vessel Enigma following a fleet action against the Borg that saw most of the command crew dead or disabled. It was her first field starship command, and as primarily a scientist and scholar she found it a difficult one. The shadow of war with the Klingon Empire, and the ever widening influence of the Orion Syndicate, foretold Enigma's mission straying from the pure scientific exploration it had been commissioned to pursue.
Upon the ship's return to Earth Spacedock, limping, more than half the crew lost, Lieutenant Jade Conway was officially ordered to take command of the USS Enigma. As distasteful as she found it, she did it as she did most things - with a stolid Vulcan determination. In half the time expected, the vessel left dry dock fully manned and fit for duty.
USS Banting
Less than a year after assuming the centre seat aboard Enigma, and after receiving a promotion to lieutenant commander, she was given first command of the newly commisioned science vessel USS Banting.
