Serenity Station
From Star Trek Online Geekipedia
Serenity Station is located in the Alpha Quadrant and is somewhere north east of and near the vicinity of the Badlands but a fair distance away from Deep Space Nine.
The "Badlands" are located in Sector designated 04-70. It is a region of space along the border between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union, that are known for intense plasma storms and gravitational anomalies, for that reason, it was commonly avoided by most interstellar traffic.
Serenity Station's beginnings arose from the strife of the Dominion War. Starfleet began to take heavy fleet losses and realized the need for a new medical & repair facility on the front lines.
But with repair and construction fleets stretched to the limit keeping the precious Stardocks in operation, spare resource was scarce and subject to infighting between Starfleet Command's factions.
Frustrated, an unorthodox Starfleet Medical captain - Dr Amy Weaver came up with a novel idea. The ageing hospital supercruiser USS Asclepius, which had lost its engineering section during the war and was due to be decommissioned, still had most of its other facilities intact. Enlisting the help of some Engineering friends and calling in many favours, Dr. Weaver had the Asclepius hauled out to the Badlands.
It was hardly a smooth journey: along the way the crews performed over two dozen rescues and saved thousands of lives. At every berth, the ragtag flotilla of space gypsies got a little bigger... and so did the Asclepius. Abandoned space stations, other derelict craft, spare parts scrounged from a hundred worlds, all of these were gradually added as time went on - until finally, a fully-fledged (if not always totally reliable) spacedock and hospital port hauled itself into deep orbit at Serenity Point.
Although affectionately described as a "junkheap" even by its own crew, the variety of systems aboard the old Serenity - Federation shields, Klingon torpedo banks, Cardassian disruptors, and even a few useful odds and ends from the Breen - made Serenity a surprisingly tough opponent in the face of adversity.
With the change in command in 2408, a new, modern Serenity has been built under the watchful eye of Fleet Admiral Baumer. The new Immense-class station uses standard Federation technology - solid, reliable, and less prone to having the primary comm array fall off for no apparent reason. But the spirit of adventure, defiance in the face of the odds, and the core mission of search and rescue remains as strong as ever.
Serenity soon found itself in need of a fleet to both defend and be deployed on rescue missions. All too often Federation ships in distress were in an area far too dangerous to send a lone medical ship or runabout. Those who respected the mission of rescue - and indeed, many who had been rescued - began banding together to take on these dangerous missions. Thus was the Firefly Fleet born...
