Development
As the Dominion War drew to a close, Starfleet Command began to rethink their strategy for deep-space exploration and the Explorer-type starship. With the assistance of the eminent Dr. Leah Brahms, Starfleet began developing a new concept for starship design – the dual warp core ship. Their logic was that a smaller, faster, more discrete ship with a secondary warp core could carry a substantial array of astrometric instrumentation that could be used at long range without compromising the power requirements of the ship’s primary systems. The design was developed for the Intrepid-class class spaceframe and final plans for the design were delivered in 2389. The field equations governing the operation of this dual core system proved to be most difficult. Development and testing of subsystems were initiated in 2390 and construction of the NX prototype was initiated in 2398 at the Utopia Planitia yards. The designation for this NX project was the “Alexandria Project”. But the massive hump created by the secondary warp core prompted the design and construction crews to give the ship a less glamorous nickname - the “camel-class”.
Commissioning and Deployment
Completed four days before the dawn of the 25th century, the prototype “camel-class” ship was commissioned on January 2, 2400, as the USS Alexandria. The complexity of the dual warp core system required 18 months of system calibration and overhaul before initial shakedown cruises could be conducted in the Sol system. By mid 2401, Starfleet Command authorized the design as spaceworthy and began reviewing officer profiles to select a candidate to command the Alexandria. The officer selected was Commander Duncan Teg, who was currently serving as first officer aboard the Intrepid-class starship USS Clarke. Promoted to captain, Teg was briefed at Utopia Planitia on the project and assumed command later that year. After additional shakedown cruises, the ship was certified as fit for deep space duties.Beta Quadrant Mission
Under the command of Captain Teg, the Alexandria conducted a four year mission in the Beta Quadrant mapping and surveying in previously unexplored regions of that quadrant. The ship was assigned diplomatic missions to reinforce relationships with Beta Quadrant races and to represent the Federation.
Design review
Captain Teg retained command of the Alexandria following his promotion to Rear Admiral and assignment as to Beta Quadrant Exploration Operations in 2407. The ship was assigned a formal registry number at that time. Teg surrendered command of the Alexandria in 2409 when he was reassigned to the Second Fleet as the commanding officer of the Exploration and Research Division. Despite the success of the Alexandria-subtype in her first tour, there has been no additional effort to construct sister ships in the class as Starfleet is still reviewing the merits of the design.
