History
The Challenger is the third of eleven Galaxy-class starships built in Starfleet. It was constructed at the Utopia Planitia shipyard in 2358, and finished in 2361, after several delays.
Dominion War
During the Dominion War, the Challenger was assigned to the Second Fleet, part of Task Force 91.
Notable Engagements
The Challenger was present in many major engagements during the war. It was present during Operation Return, the First Battle of Chin'Toka, and the Battle of Cardassia.
Post-War Assignment
Even after the war, the Challenger is still on an active duty schedule.
USS Voyager
Challenger was a part of the ragtag fleet assembled by Admiral Owen Paris to help defend Earth against a possible Borg attack in mid-2378. This "incursion" was nothing more than the U.S.S. Voyager's stunning return home.
Uncharted Waters
Captain Elana Moore had been assigned to the Challenger to accompany her on her odyssey of exploration in the Kaillera Expanse following the Voyager incident. The Challenger was to oversee colonization and construction in the area. Following a recall to receive a major refit however, the ship ended up being the testbed for a total of four experimental transwarp coils Starfleet developed from data gathered from Voyager's experence with the Borg. On it's first attempt to use the coils in 2380 following the refit, the ship found itself five years outside Federation charted space. On the far side of the Romulan empire and a month inside the Delta quadrant. During it's return to Federation space it charted Chodak space on the far side of the Romulan Star Empire and saw contact with several unknown species and a few previously encountered by Voyager including the Hierarchy and Hirogen.
Refit
Challenger is a Mark-VI Galaxy-class refit. As such, she has unique technologies in her arsenal.
Propulsion
The Challenger is equipped with two QM6-19 tricyclic warp engines, which allow the ship to sustain a maximum velocity of warp 9.985, while reducing damage to subspace.
Defense
The ship holds two shield generators, each projecting two layers of shielding around the hull. Two are contour-conformal, while the others are spherical orbs protruding from the ship.
The Challenger is also equipped with new, hybrid pulsed phaser arrays, which allow the ship to fire high-energy bursts of nadion energy faster than a Sovereign-class starship.
Structural Changes
As part of the refit the Challenger received a new command pod and bridge identical to those used on Sovereign-class starships.
Crew
The Challenger, being a Galaxy-class, can hold up to 5,000 people at one time. Its crew compliment is 1,020, as of 2408.
