Commissioned in 2357, Enigma was an experimental science vessel with an orignal mission to study xenoanthropological development of humanoid species in the Alpha quadrant, xenoarcheological sites in regions not generally open to more general, non-Starfleet researchers, and to provide a Starfleet presence where research expeditions were active in outlying areas and under potential threat from unknown hostiles.

During a fleet action against the Borg in 2399, most of the command crew were killed or disabled and Lieutenant Jade Conway took command and managed to save the ship and its remaining crew. Shortly after returning to Starfleet Earth, Lt. Conway was officially ordered to assume command of the U.S.S. Engima as her captain.

From the log, during her intial address to the crew

We have survived a great test and continued to serve. Our mission to explore, to discover and to protect those that do the same continues on, however in addition we must now be ready to defend the federation more than ever before. We have lost 27 crew members. Each of their names lives on in the work that we do from this day forward. Enigma is a Starfleet vessel and carries with her that banner to every system, every open area of space that she goes, and with every mission that she completes. We, as her crew, carry the names of those 27 crew members lost in our minds if not on our uniforms and we shall not dissapoint or disgrace them.

I thank each of you for remaining, and for those new to this vessel, I welcome you. You shall not feel your time aboard Enigma has gone to waste.
